Clip 3: Echoes of An Epic
Film: Echoes of an Epic, Talelight Films. (Website) This beautiful short film was was inspired by a piece of mine called Echoes of an Epic. The piece itself is at the center of the film. I had a great time revisiting this melody while writing the underscore. Listening to the original piece would help understand how I made use of the theme. Echoes of an Epic The film is about a man's quest to create art and how his obsession might have cost him his life. In this scene, the main character dies as his muse completes his last work, a piece called, of course, Echoes of an Epic. What I like the most about this cue: Not making a bit musical deal at the moment of Lucas's death. We can see he is dying, the music doesn't need to point this out. Instead, the music plays right through, focusing on the few notes of the flute symbolizing the creation of his last piece. The music is tender and of small scale, not a big melodramatic sweeping orchestral string thing. I find this much more poignant and truthful. And I like the part accompanying the muse's slow walk. The music almost builds to a quasi heroic climax, which imbues her slow walk with purpose, and also gives lets us know what she is going to write. |
