The life of an artist is never easy and patronage has been an important part of of the history of art, everywhere in the world.

Traditionally, patrons have been rulers, nobles and people of means. The Church has also been a major patron of the arts.

The best known patrons in the history of art were probably the Medici family of Florence. And pretty much every well-known artist has enjoyed patronage at one time or another: Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Shakespeare,

The commissioning of art works is the best known form of patronage, but it is something that has grown more rare in our modern society.
